Tiffany Stone Sphere Bertrandite Gemstone Ball - Utah,
spr35
|
- Dale, the
spheremaker, made this large Tiffany Stone (Bertrandite) sphere and
he did an outstanding job.
- The material
is of excellent quality, has brecciations, a variety of colors
(including white, pink, blue, purple, and black,) dendrites, and
best of all it is very fluorescent. Under the black light the
sphere is green color in several shades (including dark green) and
some purple.
- The sphere
has a slight uneven feel in several small sections. This is due to
the dissimilar hardnesses of the various minerals in bertrandite.
It is also due to vugs (voids) with and without
crystals.
- There are
minor surface imperfections and healed fractures. Overall, the
sphere has a very good polish.
- Bertrandite
consists of various minerals like opalite, fluorite, manganese (it
forms dendrites), as well as very small amounts of beryllium. It is
commercially mined primarily for its beryllium content but some of
it makes it to the minerals market for us to enjoy. One word of
caution though: dust from elemental beryllium is toxic and a known
carcinogen. Lucky for us mineral collectors and according to my
research, beryllium occurs in nature only chemically combined with
minerals and its mostly known forms are emerald (beryl) and
bertrandite. Although the material of this sphere is considered non
toxic, please treat it with respect and do not lick it or make tea
from it... This "word of caution" is just that. It also serves as a
reminder for those who have worked with bertrandite and to inform
the buyers not familiar with it.
- This
tiffany stone sphere is an outstanding collector's
item.
- Its
approximate weight is 3 lbs 2 oz, and it has just over 4" diameter
(102 mm).
- Please note
that there are many more photos of this tiffany stone sphere
following the description. The photos were taken outdoors in
sunlight and from different angles and therefore, color differences
from the actual sphere are possible.
