3"D Red Mary Ellen Jasper Stromatolite Ball - spf12

    • This is a gorgeous sphere and an outstanding example of Mary Ellen jasper Mary Ellen Jasper occurs in the Banded Iron Formation in Minnesota.
    • The material is also a fossil called stromatolite. For simplicity, stromatolites are fossil algae and, since I am not authority on the subject, I will live it at that.
    • The red color is due to iron oxide which resulted from the oxidation of the iron in the Banded Iron Formation. The oxygen, for the oxidation, was supplied by cyanobacteria which produced the oxygen during their photosynthesis process. This oxidation occurred two or more billion years ago and affected the upper layers of the formation. The lower layers are green and black and they are unoxided.
    • Approximate size: 3 inches or 76 mm
    • Approximate weight: 1 lb 6 oz
    • This Mary Ellen Jasper sphere is an outstanding collectors' item!
    • Please note that there are more photos of this sphere following the description. The photos were taken outdoors in sunlight and color differences from the actual stone are possible.
